Service Learning Throughout the year, various college and university groups come to the Chapel from around the country to serve, learn and reflect on their service and related issues. Many of these visiting groups are part of the network of the Bonner Foundation of Princeton, New Jersey. While staying at the Chapel, the students serve within the Chapel programs and with the Chapel's community partners, while also meeting local community leaders for lunchtime discussions as well as seminars around topics such as poverty, racism and Appalachian issues. The Chapel's partner in hosting these groups is Wheeling Jesuit University and its Appalachian Institute.
During the summer, groups of church members, primarily but not solely of high school students, come and give a week of service at the Chapel as part of our Workcamp program. These groups serve within the Chapel's summer programs (Freedom School and Energy Express) at our good partners next door, the Catholic Neighborhood Center, as well as doing needed home repair and rehab within the Wheeling community. The groups eat breakfast and lunch each day with the summer program participants and become important members of the summer community. Other opportunities for service and reflection can be arranged for shorter times, including weekend work through the year. For more information about any of the above programs, please call or email the Chapel. 304.232.2630 (phone) / Email Address: laughlin@wvdsl.net Please click on the links below to find out more about the work of the Chapel: Current Calendar of Events Laughlin Memorial Chapel |
